IALD 2019 - Sawmill Market Tour (and Hot Air Balloons)

Sawmill Market is Albuquerque’s premier urban market set in a historic lumber warehouse in the Sawmill District, and Senior Lighting Designer Addie Smith was invited to give a tour of the in-progress lighting design as part of IALD 2019. A rich part of the city’s history, between the late 1800s and early 1900s, this location was a bustling epicenter for industry along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, first as agricultural land, then owned by the American Lumber Company, the largest lumber company in the Southwest. This building that was once home to over 800 sawmill employees will now serve as a community gathering hall for Albuquerque, showcasing the beauty of New Mexico through food, diversity and art. Sawmill Market will celebrate culinary traditions as well as emerging trends offering a diverse tenant mix of local food vendors, full service restaurant experiences and unique retail.

The IALD Sawmill Tour was a big hit and success. We framed the conversation around lighting design and construction challenges, design changes in the field, the importance of mock-ups, initial budgeting, VE, and purchasing processes from an Owner and Lighting Designer’s perspective. Team members from Heritage Hotels really made the conversation enriching.

As a bonus, part of our design team got to not only attend, but also participate in the Balloon Fiesta with our Heritage Hotels client lead Sara! We’ve had a chance to work with her on a lot of New Mexico projects, and she and her husband invited us to become part of the Mr. Sprinkles crew for the Fiesta. We were up bright and early at 3:00am to get to the balloon field on time, but it was definitely worth it!
